HERE. is an upcoming SFW digital and physical zine that ponders and celebrates the experiences of people of color (PoC) in the furry subculture.

We plan to collaborate with artists and writers, asking them to share their interpretation of what it's like to be a part of this community as well as encouraging them to build and intertwine their works with one another. In doing this, we want to shed more light on the many PoC furries that are a visible part of the community, and that it is possible for furries to be PoC.

The creators, @PIBBLEBITCH and @magicalmoss on Twitter, will be selecting individuals who are interested in collaborating on this zine, and are passionate about contributing to the representation that PoC furries desperately deserve.

Our goal is to publish a creative magazine, filled with wonderful imagery and strong language, that tells our community that people of color are HERE.

FAQ.

Q. What is HERE. ?

HERE. is a zine that hopes to celebrate PoC creatives' voices in the community, and asks them to make work about how the fandom has impacted their identities. This is a curated, intersectional work about PoC in a white dominated space, but we hope non-PoC will support & enjoy our content too!

Q. Is there specific guidelines on what kind of PoC can apply for this project?

We intentionally left any questions about labels and how you identify off of the form so that you can tell us your unique story! However you identify as POC is important to us. This includes, but is not limited to: Black, Latinx/Hispanic, Asian, Native American/International Indigenous, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and Mixed individuals (white passing or no). As long as you can answer our question about how furry affects your identity as a PoC with genuineness and enthusiasm, we will consider your application.

Q. What is a zine?

Zines are collaborative (usually fan-related) publications based on a theme. The creators will gather a bunch of artists/writers/creators and have them make a piece that fits the theme, then publish them together! Although Zine sounds a little like Magazine, they tend to come in a bigger variety of shapes and sizes as well. The final product of HERE. Will print more like an art book than your average magazine.

Q. What are Page Artists and Spread Artists?

Single page artists will make up the majority of our zine, and will be asked to make one portrait (vertically oriented) illustration. Spread artists, or featured artists, will be allotted two pages adjacent to each other with which to make a double-sized landscape illustration. There is a very limited number of spreads available, and we'll be more stringent on portfolio quality for those applicants.

Q. How are artists and writers selected for the zine?

We will select applicants based on their portfolios/ability as well as affinity to the subject of the zine via the longform answer in the application first. We will also consider how well you work with a team and your ability to meet deadlines.

Writers will also be asked to pitch a working concept of what they wish to write about. We hope to get different takes on HERE., and encourage you to take on the subject of your topic proposal using any method you like.

Q. How long do I have to apply for HERE.?

We have a soft deadline on July 31st. We will be selecting and contacting applicants on the day of August 1st, but you may continue to submit that day as well.

Q. How many people will participate in HERE. ?

At this time, we are planning on a 100 page publication. Based on those numbers, we will be accepting 60 single-page artists, 10 spread artists, and up to 8 writers depending on length of work. These numbers are subject to change based on the quantity and quality of applications.

Q. How will the proceeds to HERE. be distributed?

A majority of preorder and online proceeds will go towards the printing of the physical book. The additional proceeds will go to either compensating the participating individuals, or to a QPOC charity. The decision for the latter two choices will be made through a vote. The curators, @PIBBLEBITCH and @magicalmoss, will not be profiting from this zine at any capacity past that of the other participating members.
